Do You Have Mold & Mildew In Your Home? Pt. 1

The air in your basement and crawl space cycles through your home via the stack effect.
Did you know that up to 40% of the air you breath in your home is from your crawl space or basement?

This is due to the Stack Effect.

The Stack Effect, a.k.a. the Chimney Effect, is the upward movement of air in your home. As air warms, it rises. So, as the air in your basement or crawl space warms, it cycles through your home.

Any particles that are lighter than air - like mold spores and humidity - will also be cycled through your home.

So, how do you know if you have a mold problem?

Mold detection tips:
According to the CDC, all types of mold should be considered equally when evaluating your health risk. If you notice any of the items listed below, chances are good that you have mold in your home.
  • Musty or moldy smell in your home
  • High indoor humidity
  • Moldy, chalky patches on the floorboards or wall
  • Health problems: sore throat, stuffy nose, eye irritation, rashes, wheezing or shortness or breath, and even lung infections!

An Inspection Is Not A Sales Pitch

You get a qualified inspector, not a sales person
Let's face it, we've all had experiences with pushy salesmen. You invite them into your home for an inspection of some sort, and they don't leave until you sign a contract. It's frustrating and stressful!

This is why, at JES, we don't believe in hiring salesmen. When you call us for your free inspection, you get a qualified inspector.

All of our inspectors receive in-depth training, certification and mentoring before they are allowed to provide a free inspection.

Crawl Space Humidity

Mold is caused by crawl space humidity

Hot weather, dirt and vented crawl spaces can create big problems. All of these factors play a role in the health of your crawl space. And if you have one, or all, of these problems, you could have a mold or moisture problem!

To better understand how these problems can arise, let's start with the flow of air throughout your home.

Air travels...
As the air in your home warms, it rises and is replaced with air from the lowest section of your home (your crawl space). This natural upward air movement is called the “stack effect” - which is how chimneys work.

As a result, the air in your crawl space is cycled up through the living areas of your home; and any airborne particles, like moisture or mold, are carried up with the air.

Up to 40% of the air we breathe on the first floor of our home comes from the crawl space.

JES Reviews

Angie's List reviews on JES Foundation Repair
Who doesn't want to toot their own horn? At JES, we don't have to! Here are a few Angie's List reviews that we've received from happy customers. Enjoy!

"I received a free estimate from JES regarding a crack that had developed in a ceiling cross-beam in my ranch-style house.  JES sent an evaluator for the estimate at my convenience.

The evaluator arrived promptly and immediately began his evaluation. During the evaluation, he evaluated not only the crack, but areas around the crack and the attic above the beam in question. He also took several pictures and measurements, which he said were for use by the firm's engineering staff in order to validate his on-the-spot findings or (if repairs were required) to develop a repair plan.

While my situation required only a cosmetic repair and further monitoring, the evaluator did not immediately ask if I wanted an estimate on the drywall repair (which was a good thing, in my opinion). The evaluation was validated by an estimate from another company, who came to the same conclusion and recommended course of action.

I am confident that, if repairs were needed, I would have received a fair and complete estimate.

I was thoroughly satisfied with the professionalism and responsiveness of this firm and this evaluator."
-Martin B., Virginia Beach, VA

"Because of chronic moisture problems under our house, we chose to have JES install their crawl space encapsulation system. Their crew arrived right on time and the job was completed exactly as they had promised. The crew members were very pleasant and treated our home and yard with respect. In the course of the job, our well pump was damaged. JES paid to have it replaced. We were especially impressed by their field specialist for home improvements, Jack Jackson. He always responded to our calls and made sure we were 100% satisfied. We just had our yearly termite inspection and our technician who has been under our house many, many times said  that everything looked great. We also have noticed that our house seems warmer and even our doors are not sticking."
